Below are some scripture readings that have been read at the Lord's Table at New York Avenue:

Matthew 18:1-4; 10-14

At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"

He called a little child and had him stand among them. And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

. . ."See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.

"What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should be lost." (NIV)

If a child cannot rest at bedtime without a special blanket or toy, that child will search diligently until finding the lost blanket or toy.  Then the child can finally rest.  This parable tells that Our Heavenly Father is willing to leave 99 safe sheep to go in search of a lost one.

On any given day we might find ourselves in the fold of 99 or as the one who has wandered off.  Maybe we have strayed into adultery or drug addiction, pornography, selfishness, pride, or resentment.  Whatever it is the Lord is looking for us so He can bring us back.  He does not want us to be lost.

Now we have a special time set aside to examine ourselves.  We will find ourselves dirty and unclean.  We have a problem.  We cannot cleanse ourselves.  But God the Father has given us His Son so that we can be forgiven.

Thanks for the bread:  Heavenly Father, we are so thankful for your never-ending love.  Thank you for seeking us out and bringing us home to you where we find true rest.
Thanks for the cup:  Thank you, Lord for Jesus.  We are grateful for this time together on the first day of the week to meet around the table and remember that you love us so much that you gave your one and only Son to suffer and die so that we might be reconciled to you.  It is in His most precious name that we pray.  Amen.

John 6:51-58

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."

Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"

Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.  Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.  Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.  Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.  This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever."(NIV)

Heavenly Father, as we meet around this table may we be mindful of the costly sacrifice of your one and only son.  Let us not forget that your son Jesus' flesh was broken and his blood spilt so that our sins are forgiven.  As we partake of this bread we are thankful for Jesus, the Bread of Life--the source of eternal life.

John 15:5-12

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.  If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you.  This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.  If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love.  I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.  My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. (NIV)

Dear Lord, as we partake of this fruit of the vine we realize that our lives are nothing unless we are connected to the vine source.  Help us to remain in the word and obedient to the teachings of Jesus:  that is to love one another and to live a life of fruitfulness so our joy may be complete.

We Gather In Remembrance

We gather in remembrance of Jesus. We partake of "the bread" in remembrance and we partake of "the cup" in remembrance. Remembrance is more than "remembering." Remembrance includes this special moment of "remembering" but goes far beyond this. Remembrance is a constant state of thinking and living in Jesus. We assemble as "the body of Christ" because the church is his body. We assemble because we constantly recall his words "I will drink this cup and eat the bread with you in the kingdom." The Lord's table fellowship is our statement to each other that our life is dedicated to Jesus. The manner in which we commune must be consistent with the teachings of Jesus lest we judge ourselves to be unworthy disciples.

The New Testament in My Blood

Jesus said as recorded by Luke 22:19-20 as he began this supper "do this in remembrance of me."  Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you." (KJV). The blood of Jesus on the cross made possible a new covenant or testament or will for us from God. The blood of Jesus makes possible forgiveness of our sins and constant forgiveness from God "as we walk in the light as Jesus is in the light." The blood shed on Calvary was necessary before the pouring out of the Holy Spirit upon all flesh at Pentecost. This was so all people might become "children of God" and share in eternal life. Our eternal inheritance is made possible by what this table brings to remembrance is life with God forever. Let us give continual thanks for the blood of Jesus the Christ.

Who Would Have Thought This?

"For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you. That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, "Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me." After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, "This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as often as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord's death till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthy, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord." Who would have thought that eating a small bit of bread and drinking a small cup of grape juice would proclaim to the world that Jesus will come again? Yet it does every time the church assembles and communes around the Lord's table. This memorial has proclaimed Jesus' life and death for nearly 2000 years. The proclamation goes far beyond this gathering and is sounded each time Christians live like the master in their daily lives. There is proclamation as we live by Jesus' teaching and example. May we never forget that we represent Jesus to the world as we proclaim now that he will return for us.

Drinking Judgment To Ourselves

" Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthy, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world."

This Supper with our Lord requires a time of self examination. The self examination concerns our life's goals and direction. Is our self living by the commitment we made to die to sin and live IN CHRIST? Does our faith in the body and blood of Jesus determine our values, actions, and hopes? Failure to examine ourselves by Jesus words and his example is to eat and drink without discerning his body and blood. This Lord's Supper unites us in a fellowship of believers that Jesus is the Christ the son of the Living God. Let us bow our hearts before him in thankfulness as we give thanks for the bread and cup.

The Cup of Blessing

1 Corinthians 10:16-17 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we [being] many are one bread, [and] one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. (KJV) Paul exhorts the Corinthians to holiness by reminding them of their fellowship with Jesus at our Lord's table. Likewise, the "cup of blessing " which we now bless is a participation or communion in the blood of Christ. The bread which we now break is a statement of our fellowship or communion in the body of Christ. Paul reminded the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 10:21 " Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils. (KJV) Eating with the Lord at his table prohibits fellowship with the world. The completion of the spiritual lesson Paul desired was " Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." As we commune with our Lord at his table let us always live to the glory of God.

The Supper is Not an Evening Meal

"When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper. " 1 Corinthians 11:20

The concept of "the Lord's supper" may bring to mind our cultural idea of an evening meal. In the New Testament the word "supper" comes from the root word "to eat or dine." The Lord's institution of this "supper" is well known to the church as the time we gather for table fellowship with our Lord. His words were " But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom." Matthew 26:29 (KJV) To the Christian, the Lord's Supper is a proclaiming in a visible way that Christ is the spiritual nourishment of life. Remember his words recorded in John 6:48-58 "I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, how can this man give us [his] flesh to eat? Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whosoever eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. (KJV) This supper is our public statement that Jesus is the bread of life to us and we gather with him because our spirits are sustained by him.

Remembrance of the Heavenly Banquet

The Lord's supper is a remembrance of Jesus' teaching concerning the heavenly banquet that we have been invited, it is the sharing of fellowship with God and Christ ."Then said he unto him, a certain man made a great supper, and bade many:

And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready. And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. So that servant came, and showed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper." Luke 14:16-24. In remembrance of Jesus we realize that we have been invited by God to a spiritual feast. This spiritual feast is forgiveness of sins through Jesus' blood. We have partaken of his Holy Spirit. It is no longer we who live but Christ lives in us.

The Supper of the Great God

Revelation 19:17-21. And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all [men, both] free and bond, both small and great. And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshiped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which [sword] proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh. KJV Because of Jesus' life and death there is victory over all the forces of sin and evil. The battle has already been won. We live to gather at the supper of the great God. We gather today around our Lord's table in remembrance of Jesus who made possible the great final great supper with God.

Remembrance By the Way We Treat Each Other

"For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me." 1 Corinthians 11:23,24 The life of Jesus continues on earth in his body, the church. Jesus continues the work of saving lost mankind by calling all sinners to share in the forgiveness his blood made possible. Paul reminds us that the church must show their "remembrance" of Jesus by they way we treat each other. The Lord's Supper is a time to proclaim to each other that Jesus is our spiritual food and that this spiritual food provides the power to love each other. The Lord's Supper, baptism, and godly love are three physical actions that the church constantly observes "in remembrance of Jesus." As the body gathers today let our memories go to the night our Lord was betrayed when he took bread and the cup and established this Supper for us.

Like Our Lord's Death and Resurrection

"Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." Romans 6:3,4 The death of Jesus on the cross is celebrated by those who have partaken of the blessing that his blood made possible. Christians are a forgiven people as we "walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanest us from all sin." Remember your baptism when you died to all sin, was buried in water and were then raised out of the watery grave just as your Lord was raised out of the earth. The Lord's Supper and our baptism into Jesus is part of our "remembrance of Jesus." This Supper is a remembrance of our Lord's body and blood. It should include our remembrance of the time we appropriated the blessings of his body and blood. "For as often as we eat this bread, and drink this cup, we do show the Lord's death till he come."

Spiritual Benefits of the Supper

When Paul wrote the Corinthians "When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper. For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken," he was bringing to their remembrance the words of the Lord "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." John 13:34,35 Godly love, that is to love like God loves, is always in the mind of a disciple of Jesus. The Lord's Supper may become a tradition without the spiritual benefits that Jesus intended. If we have no remembrance of his words "love one another, as I have loved you" it becomes impossible for like the Corinthian this supper is not the Lord's supper. As we gather around this table "in remembrance of Jesus" may all the words and actions of our Lord flood our memories and guide our lives as we commune with him at his table.

Blood and the Supper

In 1615 scientists discovered the human circulation system and began to understand the significance of blood to human life, but special significance has been placed on blood from the earliest Biblical record. 1) After Cain killed Abel, the Lord said to Cain "The voice of your brother's blood (referring of course to his life that had been taken away from him) is crying to me from the ground." (Genesis 4:10)   2) After the flood, God told Noah and his family: "Every moving thing that lives shall be for you for food . . . Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood." (Genesis 9:3-4)  3) In the Levitical law, the relationship between blood and life is stated "For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it for you upon the alter to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement, by reason of the life." (Leviticus 17:11) 4) Blood was a central part of the making and renewing of the Old Covenant. God said that the person offering the sacrifice as part of renewing the Covenant "shall kill the bull before the Lord; and Aaron's sons ... shall present the blood ... and he shall flay the burnt offering and cut it into pieces." (Leviticus 1:5-6) The implication in these covenants was always that if the person entering into the covenant broke it, the same thing could be done to him as was done to the animal which was killed as part of the making and renewing of the covenant. These concepts were part of the background from which God implemented his eternal plan for salvation through Jesus. God presented himself to men in a form which was recognized by men as truly alive by our understandings and perceptions, that is, a form with flesh and blood. Then, consistent with the Old Testament customs, that blood and that life were used in the ultimate purification rite when Jesus' blood was shed for us, because as the writer of Hebrews says in Hebrews 9:22 "Apart from the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins". Also, 1 John 1:7 reminds us that "the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sins". . We now have an opportunity to symbolically mix not only Jesus' blood but also his body with ours, to again recognize that through his giving us his body and his blood he is giving us his life, and to renew our sharing of life with him. I would like to read John 6 verses 53-57. So Jesus said to them "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up in the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me."

1 Corinthians 1:4-9 Called Into Fellowship With the Lord Jesus Christ

" I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; That in every thing you are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: So that you come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that you may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. " We gather around this table to celebrate the Lord's Supper. The grace of God made this possible by Jesus' life and death. This Supper that we gather to eat each Lord's day states that we are "waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." This Supper proclaims that we live before God blameless because of our "fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ, our Lord." What a joy it is to come before God as a body of believers proclaiming our dependence on Jesus body and blood for His approval and acceptance. As we take this bread and drink the cup we proclaim our allegiance and loyalty to Jesus the Christ, Son of God.

Focus On Jesus

The Lord's Supper focuses our minds on Jesus' death, burial and resurrection. The church gathers around the Lord's table in fellowship with Jesus body and blood. We do this in "remembrance of Jesus." The Supper is for those who, like Paul state " I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me." Galatians 2:20

Our remembering of Jesus is more than for a few minutes on the first day of the week but becomes a life style like Jesus. Our remembrance of Jesus is life changing in that we died with him. "How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know you not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." Romans 6:2-4 The Lord's Supper is for those who have Christ living in them and are gathered together in fellowship with God and each other. As we eat this bread and drink this cup we "do show the Lord's death till he come."

The Covenant By My Blood

When Jesus instituted his table fellowship he told his disciples "This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do you, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread, and drink this cup, you do show the Lord's death till he come. 1 Corinthians 11:25,26 It was the last Passover supper of Jesus' life on earth. God selected the supper that commemorated Israel's deliverance from Egyptian enslavement to instruct the disciples concerning a new covenant of deliverance. Henceforth all disciples of Jesus will be "....made able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life." In remembrance of Jesus we assemble around this table. Let us give thanks and praise God for the new covenant that is made possible by the blood of Jesus. " But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not steadfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away: How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious? For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory. For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth. For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remains is glorious. 2 Corinthians 2:6-11 As we bless this bread and cup rejoice in the blessings that the New Testament or covenant affords us.

To Suffer in the Flesh is to Cease From Sin

" Forasmuch then as Christ has suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin; That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God." 1 Peter 4:1,2.

No "remembrance of Jesus" is complete unless our "remembrance" has produced a life dedicated to the "will of God." The Lord invites all to share his life. Jesus' life always moved toward death on the cross. The astonishing truth is that "... he has made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."2 Corinthians 5:21 The Lord's Supper is a time for the "those who have suffered in the flesh and have ceased from sin " to gather together with the Lord in table fellowship. The Lord's Supper was established by Jesus for his community the church. Jesus said the Supper is "...in remembrance of me." and "...as often as you eat you proclaim my death and resurrection until I come." Anyone who comes to this table who has no desire to live within the will of God has missed the point of Jesus' life and therefore they should not partake for a godless life mocks the suffering of our Lord. Therefore arm yourself with the mind of Christ in remembrance of our Lord's life and death for us and gather around the Lord's table.

Remembrance of the Love of God 1 Corinthians 13

" But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet show I to you a more excellent way. Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not love, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not love, it profits me nothing. Love suffers long, and is kind; love envies not; love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeks not her own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; Rejoices not in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; Bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails."

The amazing truth is "God loves us." He loves mankind and has always suffered by our sins. God is kind for he has made possible our salvation. God became flesh that we might believe he is near to us and desires that we share in eternal life with him.

As we meet around this table of remembrance of God in the flesh do so in remembrance of God's love and grace. Let this bread and this cup symbolize that we live until Jesus comes for us and let us love each other as he loved us.

In Remembrance of the New Commandment

When Paul wrote the Corinthians "When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper. For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken," he was bringing to their remembrance the words of the Lord, "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. As we gather around this table "in remembrance of Jesus" may all the words and actions of our Lord flood your memory and guide your life as we commune with him at his table.

Colossians 1:12--Redemption Through His Blood

Our Lord gathers with us at his table. We assemble with Jesus. This is a time of "remembrance."  Paul's words to the Colossians in chapter one beginning at verse twelve expresses part of what "remembrance consists. We are "...... giving thanks unto the Father, which has made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light. who has delivered us from the power of darkness, and has translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son in whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature

for by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him and he is before all things, and by him all things consist. Colossians 1:12-17

Our "remembrance" of these essentials of faith is to govern our lives on a daily basis for "remembrance" consists of more than remembering just while we partake of the Supper. Our "remembrance" should always include the following:

1. Jesus' blood delivered us out of the power of sin and darkness

2. We have been translated into God's kingdom

3. We are forgiven of our sins by the blood of Jesus.

4. All things were created by God, for God and by God all things consist.

Jesus is to Have Preeminence in All Things

18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. 19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fullness dwell; 20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. 21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled 22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: 23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, Colossians 1:18-23

Christ in You the Hope of Glory

26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: 27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

In Remembrance of All Spiritual Blessings

Ephesians 1:3-12 " Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as he has chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he has made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he has purposed in himself: That in the dispensation of the fullness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: 11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: 12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

In Remembrance of Christ's Death

"I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me." Galatians 2:20-22

This is true remembrance of Jesus the Christ. We live in Christ even though we are in the fleshly world. Faith in all Jesus said and did has become our standard of conduct and is our life's goal. In "remembrance of Jesus" causes us to daily remember that we have been "crucified with Christ" and therefore have been made a new creation. Now Jesus' values, goals, and lifestyle is our values, goals, and lifestyle. The new life made possible by Jesus' love and death begins with the death of self and continues only as we walk by faith and not by human wisdom. Paul stated in verse 19 the goal of life, it is " that I might live unto God."

As we commune today let us do so in remembrance of that which this bread and cup symbolize, the body and blood of God's son on the cross.
